Small Charity, Big Ideas

Trustee training for small charities

Small charities often face challenges that larger charities don’t.

Funds can be scarce, budgets are tight, and teams are often run ragged trying to carry out the day-to-day activities that their larger counterparts take for granted.

And yet, small charities are often the lifeblood of the local community. They’re fondly thought of and supported in their local area and often meet some very specific needs of the people in their immediate surroundings.

So why do small charities struggle to recruit and retain high-quality trustees?

In our experience, this is mostly down to funding (or lack thereof) and the limited training opportunities available to trustees once they’re on board.

That’s why MiraGold is launching a brand-new initiative – Collaborative Board Development training.

Why is trustee training important to small charities?

We understand that limited budgets mean that training trustees can seem like a luxury rather than a necessity. But we also firmly believe that leaving your board under-developed and untrained can be more of a risk for smaller charities than for your larger counterparts.

You know yourselves, trustees for smaller charities are often required to be quite hands on and more involved in the decision-making processes and day-to-day running of the charity.

If those trustees don’t know what they’re responsible for, or what constitutes a good decision, it’s hard to have confidence in their involvement.

What is Collaborative Board Development?

This is the training and networking opportunity that small charities in the West Yorkshire area have been waiting for. (Don’t worry if you’re not in the West Yorkshire area – after the initial pilot we hope to make this offer available throughout the UK.)

MiraGold’s Collaborative Board Development training programme recognises the need for small charities to attract and retain high-quality, gifted individuals to act as trustees.

So, while bespoke training and development sessions for each trustee might be a little out of the question for smaller charities, an opportunity to gather together with other small charities in the area could be just what you’re looking for.

How would Collaborative Board Development help our charity?

Simply put, MiraGold’s development training enables small charities like yours to invest in the training and development of your trustees.

Let’s explain a little further.

The offer:

Our Collaborative Board Development offer is an innovative approach to trustee training and board networking. It allows small charities to send one or two trustees on a full day’s training with other representatives from charities in a similar position to them.

The only thing we ask is that each trustee commits to taking what they learn back to their charities and share it with other trustees on the board – everybody wins.

Each delegate receives:

A full day of training with the MiraGold team, alongside other small, local charity trustees

One hour per month (for the following six months) facilitated networking session with the same group to share experiences and outcomes

In short:

Your trustees will gain increased confidence in their abilities

It’s a low cost trustee training option

There are valuable networking opportunities with other small local charities

It helps to bolster the skills and training of the trustees in your local area

Sound good?

Why not contact the MiraGold team to find out more about the Collaborative Board Development training available? We’d love to have a chat.
